Chile bans morning-after pills
Chilean court recently ruled against morning-after pill, the emergency contraception drug in a case brought by Catholic conservative groups. Chile is one of the few countries in the world that strictly prohibits abortion. Dubbed as the return of the Chastity belt, the decision spawned widespread controversy over its impact on women. According to the Aljazeera report, 16 per cent of Chilean school children dropped out of schools because of unexpected pregnancy. The court ruling, which said that the contraception method was unconstitutional due to its abortive nature, would deprive rape victims of means of ridding unwanted pregnancy, critics said.
